As far as performance, BlissPop ROM scores near 47-48K on Antutu for benchmarking aside from its super-fast UI.   And that’s all without overclocking, your Galaxy S5 will run just as fast as a Note 4, if not just a tad slower.   Also by installing an AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) such as BlissPop ROM, you will be able to rejuvenate/convert your phone into a full-fledged Nexus device.

For customization, BlissPop ROM is one of the most customizable ROMs out there.  You can find a full customization option for your status bar, navigation bar, notification drawer, power menu, and much much more.   For Lollipop notifications, you will be able to explicitly control which apps can give you notifications and blacklist ones that are annoying.  Also don’t forget many of the popular AOSP custom features like App Circle Bar, App Bar, Gesture Anywhere, and some more.  And yes, root is included via SuperSU app.

Battery life is insanely awesome and you can even extend it by turning on Dark Bliss, which will give you a dark theme with black background to save you a ton of battery life (as AMOLED screen on S5 uses zero energy on black pixels).

Overall, BlissPop is an excellent example of why rooting and custom ROMs can transform your phone into something else.  It’s amazing what can be done with open source and this ROM is proof of that so definitely give it a go this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Probably the biggest reason to root and install custom ROM is the fact that you can update your phone with updated software from a newer phone.  In this case, you can in fact turn your Galaxy S5 into Galaxy S6 by using a custom ROM like Sixperience ROM.

The Sixperience ROM has been ported straight from a real Galaxy S6, giving you all the new software features including Galaxy S6 theme engine, resizable floating windows, S6 apps, and much more.  Of course, you get a nice AROMA graphical installer also, allowing you to choose from three different kernels (you can overclock using Boeffla or KToonsez kernel) and even choose from two cameras (Note 4 or S5).

This ROM can be installed on most S6 models including SM-G900F/G900I/G900M, Canadian SM-G900W8, T-Mobile SM-G900T, Korean SM-G900S/K/T, and few more. (AT&T SM-G900A should be supported soon.)

There are couple things not working like fingerprint sensor (as S6 fingerprint software is not compatible with S5 fingerprint sensor) and world clock widget but other than that, the ROM itself runs rather good with great battery life.  If you are looking to turn your Galaxy S5 into an S6, definitely try out this ROM this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

For those of you with a rooted AT&T Galaxy S5 and still have not updated to Lollipop, here’s how you can easily update to Android 5.0 Lollipop and also keep root.  This method is preferred over flashing stock firmware as you will be able to keep root.

First, you will need to download FlashFire.  To do that, first sign up for Android FlashFire G+ Community, then sign up for the beta FlashFire here.  Once you do those two, open up this link with your Play Store app and you should be able to install FlashFire app.

*NOTE – This method will factory rest your device so MAKE A BACKUP of apps and SMS before preceding! (You can use Titanium Backup app for apps and SMS Backup app for SMS.)  But it does not erase your personal files, photos, and videos.

Also, download the latest AT&T Lollipop stock firmware with root.

Next, open up FlashFire app.  If the FlashFire app doesn’t open, disable auto date/time and change your system year to 2013 (this is a bug in the app).  Then it should open.

Next, hit the plus button.

Then choose, “Flash ZIP or OTA”.

Then choose the Lollipop stock firmware with root you downloaded earlier.

Hit the lightning button and it should start flashing!

Once done, your phone should reboot into system, if you get to the below screenshot, you should be all good to go!

For those of you who must stick with TouchWiz for some reason (perhaps you have an S-View cover or use Gear S watch), let me suggest a great custom ROM based on latest TouchWiz firmware, the Alliance ROM.

Alliance ROM is available for AT&T SM-G900A, T-Mobile SM-G900T, Verizon SM-G900V, Canadian SM-G900W8, and SM-G900F/G900M/G900I.

First, Alliance ROM brings you a ton of free themes you can choose from.  What I really like is that each of these themes come with its own custom keyboard.  E.g. If you install Iron Man theme, you will get Iron Man themed keyboard.  You can download and install hundreds of free themes using the Alliance Control app.

Also, you can even customize your own theme, the Alliance Control app gives you full control so you can change the colors down to the detail.  And yes, once you create a new theme, you can easily save and share with others.

Of course, it doesn’t end there.  With Alliance Control app, you will get customization options normally found on AOSP ROMs like being able to fully customize your status bar, notification panel, system animations, hardware buttons, navigation bar, and much more.

For performance, the international model comes with KTWeaker kernel and app which allows you to easily overclock to 2.764Ghz (my recommended settings) and bump your performance to Note 3 level.  Overall, Alliance ROM is excellent choice that’s going to give you lots of customization options along with fast performance so definitely give it a test drive this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

If you want to run your Galaxy S5 at the speed of light, you should definitely check out the Exodus ROM.

Based on latest Android 5.1.1, Exodus ROM is an excellent AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) that combines speedy performance, great battery life, and customization.  First, you will find excellent performance and extract the most out of your Galaxy S5’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, getting near Note 4 performance without any overlocking (near 49K on Antutu).

For customization, you will get fully-customizable navigation bar, status bar, LED notifications by color, system animations, and much much more.  ROM Control settings bring you even more stuff like LCd density changer, system app remover (for advanced users only, make a backup ROM before using this!!!), ad blocker, and OTA ROM updates.

Overal, Exodus ROM is another excellent choice for those of you who want to be on the best and latest Android 5.1.1 so give this guy a test drive this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

For those of you who have been waiting for Android 6.0 Marshmallow with root for your Samsung Galaxy S5, your long wait is over!  VRToxin ROM brings you almost a flawless Android 6.0 Marshmallow experience if you have a Galaxy S5 model that is supported.  (Currently, you can install this on the T-Mobile SM-G900T, Canadian SM-G900W8, and international SM-G900F/M/I.)

First, 4G LTE/data and voice works flawless out of the box.  For data, it didn’t work initially for me but after fiddling with APNs and also driving around, it started working just fine after that.   You will also find bluetooth and NFC working flawless.

Second, root will also work fine with Marshmallow but make sure you flash SuperSU zip file right after installing the ROM.

Third, performance and battery life is excellent.  You will get super, fast experience along with excellent battery life, nevermind the new DOZE mode that comes by default with Android 6.0.

Fourth, there’s also customization through VRToxinMods in Settings that allows you to fully tweak your phone.  Now, not everything is working in the customization mods as some are still being developed but most of it is working to give you a fun Android 6.0 experience.

Only thing not working?  The video camera does not work.  If you can live with that and also still camera works just fine, you should be able to daily drive this ROM no problem.  So, definitely give this guy a go this week(end) and do let me know how your first Android 6.0 Marshmallow experience goes for you!

For this week’s ROM of the week, check out the latest CM13 ROM with Android 6.0.1, available for all GSM variants (T-Mobile SM-G900T, Canadian SM-G900W8, SM-G900F), Sprint SM-G900P, US Cellular SM-G900R4, and SM-G900I.

This is probably the most stable and fastest Marshmallow-based custom ROM I have tried so far with pretty much everything working out of the box including voice, data, 4G LTE, bluetooth, 4K video camera, etc…etc…  So far, I haven’t been able to spot any bugs in the last few days I have been daily driving this ROM.

I know some of you were complaining that SnapChat wasn’t working on the VRToxin ROM but this CM13 ROM works with SnapChat just fine.  Other than great performance, you will get all of the features of CM13, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, DOZE mode, and lots more.

For those of you looking for a good CM AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) to run on your Galaxy S5, try the latest CM12.1 ROM builds by XDA user Albinoman887.

As of this post, official nightlies for CM12.1 ROM isn’t available for the Galaxy S5 but the next best thing is definitely these CM12.1 ROM builds.  They are not based on the latest Android 5.1.1 like the official nightlies but they will give you most of the same features and based on Android 5.1.  The only costmetic difference between the Android 5.1 and 5.1.1 versions are button menu, the Android 5.1 version does not have on-screen navigation option with your hardware keys off.

So far, I’ve tested the KLTE (for GSM Qualcomm S5 models) and the KLTESPR (for Sprint) and they both run flawless with everything working out of the box.  With Lollipop, you will also have the ability to use your 4K camera just fine along with exFat support on microSD cards so you can use 64GB or 128GB microSD just fine.  Performance is bad ass on these builds, I was able to score near 48K on Antutu with the stock kernel and no overclocking.  Battery life is also the best I’ve seen, you will get plenty long battery life with these CM12.1 builds.

If you are still on older Lollipop or older Marshmallow ROM, you should definitely check out the latest Resurrection Remix ROM as it brings a ton of new features your Galaxy S5 needs.

Based on latest Android 6.0.1, the Resurrection Remix ROM gives you full fingerprint support.  Not only that, it makes it better than stock TouchWiz since fingerprint works without having to turn the screen on.  Simply swipe your finger and your phone will unlock, just like newer Nexus 6P or 5X.  I find this alone worth installing the ROM.

Antutu scores on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow: 49,340

Performance is also excellent on this ROM, bringing you all the new speed enhancements of Marshmallow.  Antutu scores are very high scoring near 50K (that’s performance of a stock Note 4 which has faster processor) and most importantly, the ROM is fast when using it.

But the fun doesn’t stop there, unlike CM13, Resurrection Remix brings you an endless number of customization that you can play with all day long (literally).  Customizing your status bar, notification drawer, quick settings panel, navigation bar, recents, and simply having the best AOSP customization is backed right into the ROM.

For those of you who want to convert your aging Galaxy S5 into Galaxy S7 Edge, there is now a custom ROM that will do that for you, the Insanity ROM.

Based on latest Galaxy S7 Edge SM-G935F firmware Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, this is a “ported” custom ROM that gives you every software feature of S7 Edge right on your S5!

Of course, there are several things not working yet such as NFC, fingerprint sensor, and Always On Screen but they should eventually get fixed and I will have on update when it does.

But everything else works, which is awesome.  You will be able to enjoy Galaxy S7’s new UI, launcher with grid size and new TouchWiz themes, Edge screen panels, and much much more.

The ROM does also come with DPI changer app, full root with SuperSU, and even its own ROM Control via Insanity Control app which allows you to easily tweak your status bar, navigation buttons/add soft keys, enable auto call recording, and more.

You can install this ROM on T-Mobile SM-G900T, Canadian SM-G900W8, international SM-G900F/G900I/G900M, and I am currently working on getting it bootin’ on Sprint/Verizon Galaxy S5 which should be available shortly.

Without a doubt, probably the best custom ROM to run on your Galaxy S5 is Resurrection Remix ROM.

Based on latest Android 6.0.1, Resurrection Remix ROM brings your Galaxy S5 up to speed with excellent performance, battery life, and a slew of great tweaks.

Antutu scores on Android 6.0.1 with Galaxy S5 and Resurrection Remix ROM scores 58,133!  Latest version also brings even more performance improvements over previous Marshmallow RR!

While many of you still may be on TouchWiz, if you are not running AOSP ROM like Resurrection Remix ROM, you are missing out on all of the new Android 6.0.1 features such as DOZE mode, ability to convert your microSD into internal storage, app permissions, and much much more.

Not only will you benefit from latest Android Marshmallow, you will also get cool customization not offered by stock firmware like status bar customization, navigation bar tweaking, crazy navigation shortcuts like Gesture Anywhere, and even multi-window/floating multi-window.

Also, fingerprint sensor works so you can now fully enjoy both AOSP and your fingerprint sensor to keep your phone as secure as possible.  With Marshmallow app permissions, you will also be able to get higher security as apps will need your “permission” to access your phone’s peripherals such as the camera, GPS, etc..etc…

For those of you who want to get the latest Android 7.1 Nougat on your Galaxy S5, you can grab the latest CM14.1 ROM which will give you all the goodness of Nougat and even run the latest Pixel launcher along with Google Assistant.

Although not official build of CM14.1, this build includes everything working out of the box including data, voice, bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc…etc… Yes, even fingerprint works but I don’t like to use it much on the S5.

Performance is excellent on the CM14.1 ROM along with excellent battery life.  For camera, everything works including 4K video recording so you should have no problems daily driving.  CM14.1 also comes with usual CyanogenMod apps like screen recording, audio recording, AudioFX for tweaking sound on your speakers/headphones, status bar customization, and some more.

While Samsung has stopped updating the Galaxy S5, you should be able to still enjoy the latest Android OS fully with the CM14.1 ROM.  Overall, this is an excellent way to upgrade your Galaxy S5 manually yourself so if you are still on Marshmallow or Lollipop, definitely give this a test drive this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

For those of you with a rooted AT&T Galaxy S5 and still have not updated to Lollipop, here’s how you can easily update to Android 5.0 Lollipop and also keep root.  This method is preferred over flashing stock firmware as you will be able to keep root.

First, you will need to download FlashFire.  To do that, first sign up for Android FlashFire G+ Community, then sign up for the beta FlashFire here.  Once you do those two, open up this link with your Play Store app and you should be able to install FlashFire app.

*NOTE – This method will factory rest your device so MAKE A BACKUP of apps and SMS before preceding! (You can use Titanium Backup app for apps and SMS Backup app for SMS.)  But it does not erase your personal files, photos, and videos.

Also, download the latest AT&T Lollipop stock firmware with root.

Next, open up FlashFire app.  If the FlashFire app doesn’t open, disable auto date/time and change your system year to 2013 (this is a bug in the app).  Then it should open.

Next, hit the plus button.

Then choose, “Flash ZIP or OTA”.

Then choose the Lollipop stock firmware with root you downloaded earlier.

Hit the lightning button and it should start flashing!

Once done, your phone should reboot into system, if you get to the below screenshot, you should be all good to go!

For those of you who must stick with TouchWiz for some reason (perhaps you have an S-View cover or use Gear S watch), let me suggest a great custom ROM based on latest TouchWiz firmware, the Alliance ROM.

Alliance ROM is available for AT&T SM-G900A, T-Mobile SM-G900T, Verizon SM-G900V, Canadian SM-G900W8, and SM-G900F/G900M/G900I.

First, Alliance ROM brings you a ton of free themes you can choose from.  What I really like is that each of these themes come with its own custom keyboard.  E.g. If you install Iron Man theme, you will get Iron Man themed keyboard.  You can download and install hundreds of free themes using the Alliance Control app.

Also, you can even customize your own theme, the Alliance Control app gives you full control so you can change the colors down to the detail.  And yes, once you create a new theme, you can easily save and share with others.

Of course, it doesn’t end there.  With Alliance Control app, you will get customization options normally found on AOSP ROMs like being able to fully customize your status bar, notification panel, system animations, hardware buttons, navigation bar, and much more.

For performance, the international model comes with KTWeaker kernel and app which allows you to easily overclock to 2.764Ghz (my recommended settings) and bump your performance to Note 3 level.  Overall, Alliance ROM is excellent choice that’s going to give you lots of customization options along with fast performance so definitely give it a test drive this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

If you want to run your Galaxy S5 at the speed of light, you should definitely check out the Exodus ROM.

Based on latest Android 5.1.1, Exodus ROM is an excellent AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) that combines speedy performance, great battery life, and customization.  First, you will find excellent performance and extract the most out of your Galaxy S5’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, getting near Note 4 performance without any overlocking (near 49K on Antutu).

For customization, you will get fully-customizable navigation bar, status bar, LED notifications by color, system animations, and much much more.  ROM Control settings bring you even more stuff like LCd density changer, system app remover (for advanced users only, make a backup ROM before using this!!!), ad blocker, and OTA ROM updates.

For those of you who have been waiting for Android 6.0 Marshmallow with root for your Samsung Galaxy S5, your long wait is over!  VRToxin ROM brings you almost a flawless Android 6.0 Marshmallow experience if you have a Galaxy S5 model that is supported.  (Currently, you can install this on the T-Mobile SM-G900T, Canadian SM-G900W8, and international SM-G900F/M/I.)

First, 4G LTE/data and voice works flawless out of the box.  For data, it didn’t work initially for me but after fiddling with APNs and also driving around, it started working just fine after that.   You will also find bluetooth and NFC working flawless.

Second, root will also work fine with Marshmallow but make sure you flash SuperSU zip file right after installing the ROM.

Third, performance and battery life is excellent.  You will get super, fast experience along with excellent battery life, nevermind the new DOZE mode that comes by default with Android 6.0.

Fourth, there’s also customization through VRToxinMods in Settings that allows you to fully tweak your phone.  Now, not everything is working in the customization mods as some are still being developed but most of it is working to give you a fun Android 6.0 experience.

Only thing not working?  The video camera does not work.  If you can live with that and also still camera works just fine, you should be able to daily drive this ROM no problem.  So, definitely give this guy a go this week(end) and do let me know how your first Android 6.0 Marshmallow experience goes for you!
